Well Said!

Thoughts from our newest club member Louise Eklund:

Why I Joined the GBSO Commission Club

Many years ago, at a small college not far from Spillville, Iowa, I had a deeply moving musical experience. In the music listening room one day in late fall, with the beautiful strains of Antonin Dvorak’s New World Symphony filling my senses, I watched as an early snow fell lightly on an expansive field of tall, dried grass. Just beyond the field, a small bend of the Upper Iowa River curved along the edge of the campus.

The scene and the music seemed in perfect harmony. I could almost see the composer at work, inspired, perhaps, by a landscape not unlike the one before my eyes. It was almost like being there.

Imagine what it would be like to actually be there when a new piece of music is born! As a member of the GBSO Commission Club, I don’t have to imagine. I am there—along with a wonderful cadre of music lovers who were inspired to create this unique organization.

Together, we make it possible for new composers to apply their creativity and inspiration to the creation of new compositions that will be performed, for the first time ever by our own Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. Along the way, we have the chance to meet these composers, to hear what inspires them, to learn how they pursue their creative process and celebrate the premier performances of their new works.
